Lake Como hiking tours ideas
Lake Como is surrounded by mountains that plunge directly into the lake, offering spectacular panoramic views. You can therefore enjoy breathtaking vistas and picturesque glimpses of the characteristic small villages in these areas. There are numerous hiking trails that encircle Lake Como, with paths varying in terms of difficulty, from easy strolls to more challenging trails for experienced hikers.
If you're traveling without an experienced guide...
I recommend always carrying water and some food with you. Along the way, you can still find agriturismi or small traditional restaurants, but for safety, it’s always best to have water and food on hand.
There are paths you can undertake independently as they are well-marked, but before embarking, it’s advisable to thoroughly study the route (create a list of landmarks). Many trails are not well signposted, and often, your phone may not have signal.
One more note is to start in the morning, especially in the spring, autumn, and winter, as it gets dark early.
Easy hikes I recommend
- The greenway of Lake Como. A lovely hike just across Bellagio.
Getting to Colonno by boat takes too long and there is only one boat around noon.
You can read more details here.
- Sentiero del Viandante
The Sentiero del Viandante is longer than the Greenway.
My suggestion is to choose a specific section at a time, as attempting the entire trail in one day is nearly impossible.
The “Sentiero del Viandante” is approximately 45km long and is divided into four stages:
1st Stage: from Abbadia Lariana to Lierna
2nd Stage: from Lierna to Vezio
3rd Stage: from Vezio to Dervio
4th Stage: from Dervio to Piantedo
The route I recommend is a shorter segment to get started, which is the one that goes from Varenna to Bellano. I invite you to read the itinerary on the official Varenna tourism website, click here.
